The 2024 United States presidential election is over and the candidate that many of us wanted to win has won. That’s great but I think we need to remember something.
1 Timothy 2:5 says “For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus” and John 14:6 says “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” Trump won and it looks like it may not be by as close a margin as many of us thought. Also, Republicans have control of both the House and the Senate. All that is good and we should be thankful. But some of the Christians out there need to be careful. We have one Savior and it is not Donald Trump.
2 Chronicles 7:14 says “if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land”. You see and hear this verse thrown out there a lot, often on social media, but what does it mean for us, as Christians? First of all, it only applies to Christians. We need revival and you cannot revive what did not have life in the first place. We must expect that lost people are going to act like lost people. But we have a lot of supposedly saved people acting like lost people, which is part of why the lost remain lost. To paraphrase Barbara Bush, What happens in our house will have much more of an impact on what happens to our nation than what happens in the White House. It’s time that, as Christians, we quit pointing fingers so much at the Oval Office and at each-other and start pointing back at ourselves. Let’s face it, if most of us truly did what He taught us, we would not be where we are, as a nation. We cannot live out His Word perfectly, which is why His sacrifice was necessary. Each time we mess up, He gives more grace (James 4:6) and His mercies are new every day (paraphrase of Lamentations 3:22-23). But many of us seemingly aren’t even trying. A lot of the mud slinging during the presidential race has been done not by the candidates, but by their supporters and, in my experience, as much by Christians as by non-Christians. It is the goodness (kindness) of God that draws to repentance (Romans 2:4). We need to do better.
Donald Trump will be back in the White House. That’s great but what will those in your house do? You and I both need to give that question a lot of careful consideration because the answer does matter, a lot.
I believe that there are a number of issues concerning which Donald Trump’s beliefs and actions align with Scripture much more closely than do those of Kamala Harris and, therefore, I do believe that he is the presidential candidate God would have had us choose. I believe that his life may have been spared, by God, on 7/13/2024, for that reason. I do believe that it is entirely appropriate that we give thanks to Him for Donald Trump’s victory. However, Donald Trump is a man, just a man, and we must be very careful not to elevate him higher than that, not to make an idol of him, not to place our ultimate trust and hope in him. As Christians, our ultimate allegiance must not be given to and our hope cannot be found in a particular politician or political party. We must remember that our hope is in Christ alone. Donald Trump is only a man and we have only one Savior.
